MoveAbility is a program offered at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts providing dance education designed to empower physically and intellectually disabled individuals in the region.
We happily welcome individuals with physical and/or intellectual disabilities who have an interest exploring movement and self-expression through dance. Our program is designed to be inclusive and adaptable, ensuring that everyone—no matter their mobility, experience level, or communication style—has the chance to participate in a way that feels just right for them!
We encourage everyone to join us, including:
- Individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities, including autism, Down syndrome,
and other neurodivergent conditions.
- Individuals with physical disabilities, including those who use mobility aids like wheelchairs, walkers, or braces.
- Caregivers, family members, and support staff who want to participate in the fun and movement with the participants.
- Anyone looking for a friendly and creative space to express themselves through dance and be part of a supportive community.

Inclusive Classroom Training For Educators

Join Expand Movement, an inclusive dance program based in Charlotte, and Black Mountain Center for the Arts for a dynamic 6-hour workshop designed for educators across disciplines! This interactive training focuses on inclusive education principles, providing practical strategies for classroom management and movement integration in various settings

This workshop models a flexible and modular approach to education, allowing educators to experience firsthand how adaptable and inclusive teaching methods can be applied in any classroom setting.

Join us for MoveAbility classes, where everyone is welcome to explore movement, creativity, and self-expression through dance! We meet every Monday from 5:30 to 6:15 PM (beginning March 31st, 2025) at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts. These fun, free 45-minute sessions (donations are welcome) are about having a good time and building confidence together.

We'll kick things off with a gentle warm-up and then dive into some interactive activities that use music, props, and storytelling to spark your imagination and help you connect with others. You’ll have the chance to work on your own, team up with a buddy, or collaborate in small groups to create and share your very own dances. No prior dance experience is necessary—just come with a smile and a readiness to move and enjoy! We can't wait to see you there!
